Tips for Answering Salary Expectation Questions

In job interviews, companies ask various questions to learn more about a candidate’s skills and personality. A common trick question is about salary expectations.

This seemingly simple question can stump candidates. They might worry that asking for too much could lead to rejection, but asking for too little might shortchange them.

5 Tips for Answering Salary Expectation Questions


1. Do Your Research 

Don’t just throw out a number when asked about your salary expectations. Research the salary range for the role you’re applying. If you’re experienced, this process will be easier as you can refer to your last salary.

On the other hand, if you’re a fresh graduate, research the regional minimum wage (UMR), the minimum cost of living, and the minimum pay for similar roles.

Example: “My research shows that the minimum pay for this role in Jakarta is about RpX–RpY. Given that information and my two years of experience, I’m looking for a salary in the range of RpA–RpB.”


2. Give a Range

When answering salary questions, avoid providing a fixed number. It’s better to provide your expected salary as a range so the company has some flexibility and a better understanding of your capabilities.

A range also gives you a chance to get a higher salary. Still, ensure the minimum and maximum values aren’t too disparate. 

Example: “From the information I’ve gathered, the salary for this position in this region is around Rp5 million–Rp6 million. With my experience, skills, and certifications, I’m looking for a salary between Rp5,500,000–Rp6,000,000.”

3. Match It with Your Skills

To convince HR, showcase your skills and past achievements. This helps them understand that the salary you propose is consistent with your potential contribution. There’s even a chance you might receive a better offer. 

Example: “I have strong experience in this field and believe my background is well-suited for the role. I’d prefer first to discuss the responsibilities involved, then determine a fair salary accordingly.”


4. Mention Your Last Salary

If you’re experienced, you can refer to your most recent salary. This way, recruiters will know what your standard salary should be.

Example:  “At my previous employer, I earned RpX. Considering my expertise, knowledge, certifications, and last salary, my salary expectation is around RpY–RpZ.”


5. Be Open to Negotiation

After stating your desired number, you can also convey that the amount is negotiable. This increases HR’s opportunity to negotiate if your skills are a good fit.
