Tips For Keeping a Safe Driving Distance

Vehicle safety technology is getting more sophisticated over time. However, according to WHO (World Health Organization) data, 90% of traffic accidents are caused by human negligence.

This means that no matter how sophisticated a vehicle’s security features are, the driver remains the key to road safety.

One bad habit that is often overlooked is not keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

This habit indicates failure to follow the Government Regulation No. 79 of 2013 on Traffic and Transportation Networks, as a substitute for Article 62 of Government Regulation No. 43 of 1993 on Traffic Procedures.

Keeping a safe distance when driving is very important. The reason is simple: so the driver has enough space and time to react when emergency conditions arise ahead. That way, the risk of accidents can be anticipated.

2 Ways for Keeping A Safe Driving Distance

1. 3-Second Theory

In defensive driving, the safety distance is measured not in meters but in time: 3 seconds or more. Why use seconds instead of meters? Here are two underlying reasons:

  • More flexible because it can be adjusted to the speed of the car

  • Allow enough time for the brain, brake system, and vehicle to completely stop

This theory can be a powerful way to maintain a safe distance of the vehicle, because many factors affect it, such as:

  • Brains that need 0.5-1 second to process braking commands

  • The brake system needs 0.5-1 second to work.

  • The vehicle takes another 0.5-1 second to completely stop

If calculated, a car traveling at 100 km/h will travel 27.7 meters per second. That is, the ideal safety distance is 83.1 meters (27.7 m x 3 seconds). The faster the vehicle’s speed, the longer the distance must be maintained.

2. Looking at the rear wheels of the vehicle in front

Still confused with the 3-second theory? Try this simpler approach: pay attention to the rear wheels of the car ahead. If you can see the rear wheels touching the road, it means the vehicle is still a safe distance.

But, if the rear wheels look like they’re “floating” or not touching the ground, it means you’re following too closely. Immediately lower the speed until the position is safe again.

Make sure the car is always in top condition

In addition to keeping a safe distance, do not forget to check the vehicle’s condition. Make sure the brake system, tires, and other safety features are working properly.
