Beware of Auction Scam Impersonating IBID

Auction Scam Methods Are Getting Sneaky, Don’t Get Fooled!

Shopping through auctions is now a new trend for the community, especially with IBID – Balai Lelang Serasi, one of the largest and most trusted auction houses in Indonesia.

Operating since 2007, one of the business lines of PT Serasi Autoraya (SERA), which is also part of the Astra Group, regularly auctions various goods, ranging from used cars and motorcycles to gadgets, scrap, and heavy equipment.

With a long history and experience, it’s no wonder that IBID is trusted by many to hunt for auction items. However, IBID’s reputation is also often exploited by unscrupulous people to commit online auction scams.

The methods are diverse. One of them pretends to be an IBID employee and offers used cars at super-low prices. To avoid falling victim, discover the common scam methods below.

Frequently used scam methods

Booking a used car via WhatsApp

Scammers claim to be IBID staff and promise potential victims an auction win by simply booking units via WhatsApp. They then request a DP transfer to a personal account.

Fake Instagram accounts

They create an account similar to IBID’s official account, offer auction items, and then direct the victim to WhatsApp to fill out a form. The payment process is also directed to their personal account.

Fake Facebook fan page

The fake fan page is created to look like the official IBID fan page. Scammers advertise auction cars and ask victims to buy auction cards worth Rp500,000 via WhatsApp, using contacts disguised as official employees.

Scam Telegram groups

Unscrupulous people claim to be auction house staff and offer a way to redeem units from previous auction winners. They complete the action using fake testimonials and accept payment only via bank transfer or e-wallet.
